The Green Streets Initiative actually started in elementary schools! In March 2006 a group of motivated parents decided they wanted to do something to make the streets of Cambridge, Massachusetts safer for their children to walk and ride to school, and Green Streets was born! Since that time we have grown to encompass many schools around Cambridge and Somerville, Massachusetts.
If you would like to make yours a Green Streets School all you have to do is follow the instructions below:
1. Choose a Coordinator or Coordinators:
School Coordinators are responsible for letting people know about Walk/Ride Days and reminding them before they happen (the last Friday of every month). They also are in charge of organizing a celebration (big or small) on Walk/Ride Day.
2. Choose a Celebration!
Many schools use our famous, home-made, Green Streets Stamps to celebrate Walk/Ride Day (instructions to make these are below). These are Stamps with the Green Streets tree on them. Everyone who comes to school gets a stamp, even those who forgot to wear green or go green. We find that more people participate when everyone is included in the party. Others choose in-class celebrations like making green posters or snacking on green apples. You can choose whatever you want to fit the "vibe" of your school.
3. Spread the Word:
It is your job to remind people at your school each month to participate. You can post flyers, send emails, include information in your newsletter, organize some kind of "publicity" stunt: i.e. If the whole school "goes green" the principal will shave their head... whatever works for you. We have flyers, newsletter, and email blurbs available for download under our For School Coordinators section.
4. Tell us how it went!
We count on our coordinators to let us know how Walk/Ride Days are going at the schools. We have so many people participating that we can't possibly be in all those places at once, so we really appreciate it when you get back to us and let us know what happened at your school on Walk/Ride Day. This can be as simple as an email. We like pictures too!

Whether you are a student who wants to help create an environmental initiative at your school, or a teacher or parent who wants to build community, Green Streets is a great way to get started.
And if you are student looking for a way to stand out from the rest, get real-life experience, or build community. Green Streets is a wonderful way to use and practice your communication, writing, and organizational skills. In the past we have even had students coordinate Walk/Ride Days as part of a senior project!
Here's how to get started:
1. Choose a Coordinator or Coordinators:
School Coordinators are responsible for letting people know about Walk/Ride Days before they happen (the last Friday of every month), and organizing some kind of celebration on Walk/Ride Day. At a high school, there should be several student coordinators to head up student efforts, and a teacher or other staff member to head up staff efforts.
2. Choose a Celebration!
This is where you can get creative. Have you always dreamed of getting out of school early? Getting there late? What if you could organize with your teachers and administration to get to school fifteen minutes later on Walk/Ride Days, because you were hard at work putting in the extra effort to get to school using public transportation, riding your bike, or walking?
Whether you already use these options for getting to school or want to start, Walk/ Ride Days could be a great way to get that extra fifteen minutes outside of class in the fresh air.
Maybe your school will never go for that, but there are many other ways you could celebrate Walk/Ride Day... you just have to choose something that will fit the "vibe" of your school and inspire people to get involved. Other high schools have offered green snacks (such as green apples and green cookies) during lunch periods, and held a school-wide raffle.
Let us know if you want help thinking of other options for your school celebration. And don't forget about all of our retail sponsors around town. You can encourage your classmates or fellow teachers to visit those as well (See our Sponsor sections for details).
3. Spread the Word:
It is your job to remind people at your school each month.
You can post flyers, send emails, include information in your school newsletter or announcements, organize some kind of "publicity" stunt: i.e. If the whole school "goes green" the principal will shave her head... whatever works for you. We have flyers, newsletter, and email blurbs available for download under our For School Coordinators section.
4. Tell us how it went!

Colleges, Universities, and the Like
Whether you are a student who wants to make help create an environmental initiative at your school, staff, professor, or otherwise who wants to build community, Green Streets is a great way to get started.
We need Green Street's Coordinators in dorms, classes, dining halls, everywhere on campus. If you are student looking for a way to stand out from the rest, get real-life experience, or build community. Green Streets is a wonderful way to get involved in the community at large.
Here's how to get started:
1. Choose a Coordinator or Coordinators:
Coordinators are responsible for letting people know about Walk/Ride Days before they happen (the last Friday of every month), and organizing some kind of celebration on Walk/Ride Day. At a college or university, ideally you would have several student coordinators to head up student efforts, and a professor or other staff member to head up efforts on campus from that perspective.
2. Choose a Celebration!
This is where you can get creative. Some of our participating organizations don't have any incentives other than participation-- that is fine. We do find that having some kind of celebration or incentive on Walk/Ride Day is a fun way to see who is involved and encourage participation.
You could have a check-in desk where you hand out free apples, stamp hands to show participation (instructions to make a stamp below). Also feel free to tweak our model, how about a mustache Walk/Ride Day, on which all walk/riders wear or draw fake mustaches? Have you always dreamed of getting out of school early? Getting there late? How about a Raffle in the Quad?
Whether you already use these options for getting to school or want to start, Walk/Ride Days is a great way to encourage others to join in the fun.
Let us know if you want help thinking of other options for your school celebration. And don't forget about all of our retail sponsors around town. You can encourage your classmates or fellow teachers to visit those as well (See our Sponsor sections for details).
3. Spread the Word:
