Green Streets logo What is The Green Streets Initiative?

The Green Streets Initiative is an international grassroots organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA that celebrates and promotes the use of sustainable, active transportation.

Through our signature monthly "Walk/Ride Days" and other community and educational efforts, we help people personally experience the ways that environmentally friendly and healthier modes of transportation can enhance their lives.

Our aim is to create safer, healthier and quieter streets and more vibrant communities for commuters and citizens of all kinds.

Dsc04969_2What are Walk/Ride Days?

Green Streets is best known for our Walk/Ride Days, which occur on the last Friday of every month.  On these days, people everywhere are invited to

  • first, Go Green (walk, bike, use public transit, skate, canoe, etc.)
  • and Wear Green...
  • then celebrate and get rewarded! Celebrate in your school or workplace - often with special incentives, raffles, thank-you's - and then get rewarded online and by a network of local retailers and other businesses who will thank you with raffles, discounts and freebies you for your green-going efforts.)

Our vision is a monthly community-wide party, which celebrates "green" transportation, gives people an opportunity to make community connections, and promotes a festive local atmosphere.

Upcoming Walk/Ride dates are listed below. (Please note that many US schools and companies move their in-house celebrations of Walk/Ride Day a week or two early in Nov. and Dec., because of national holiday vacation times.)

Who is Involved?

Georgelynde-FMA6thgrade (2) Anyone and Everyone!  Walk/Ride Days draw from many sectors of participating communities; from schools and universities, to businesses and retailers.  We began in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and quickly spread into neighboring cities and then throughout the Boston area. We have also spun off satellite organizations in Portland, Maine (portlandgreenstreets.org), Ohio, and West Bridgford, England (www.greenstreetswb.blogspot.com), We are constantly expanding to other areas.

Volunteering with Green Streets is an easy and rewarding way to give back to your community.  If you want to learn more about how to get involved visit our page: How to Get Involved.

Rewards and Sponsorships:

One unique and popular feature of Walk/Ride Days, is Green Streets' innovative idea to include local businesses in the celebrations!  On Walk/Ride Day, people who wear and go green are eligible to partake in a host of rewards.  These rewards include everything from discounts at local retailers, to the chance to win prizes in our on-line raffle.  We call these businesses our Sponsors. To learn more about becoming a sponsor visit our page For Retail Sponsors and to learn who our current sponsors are, click on the links by city: eg. Cambridge, Somerville, Medford.

What Next?

Our approach to involving such a large number of people in one movement is to ask individual citizens to bring Green Streets into their workplaces, community organizations, and schools.  Therein, these individuals acts as coordinators for our efforts.  This model asks diverse groups of people to take action into their own hands through a community-oriented approach. And we need you to be involved!

Our Website is one of our tools for organizing. Please use it, and all the information we have provided, to spread the word about Green Streets by:

  • Getting involved
  • Starting Walk/Ride Days in your own towns and cities
  • Reading the Inspiring Stories on our website
  • Reading our History,
  • Downloading and sharing our brochures which describe Walk/Ride Days and Green Streets.
  • or...

Just participate in Walk/Ride Days by wearing and going green on the last Friday of every month!

Please also feel free to contact us for more information: walk-ride-days@comcast.net

Happy Movements!
